Chemotherapy After Surgery for Colon Cancer Lengthens Survival

A new study shows that it is beneficial to get chemotherapy after surgery for colon cancer metastases.  In this study, patients had complete surgical resection of lung or liver metastases.  Some patients had chemotherapy after surgery and some did not. The patients who had chemotherapy had longer survival than those who had surgery only.  However, it was only 62.2 months in the Chemotherapy plus Surgery Group compared with 47.3 months in the Surgery Alone Group. Patients must decide whether this difference is significant enough to go through all of the problems caused by chemotherapy, such as anemia, nausea, loss of hair, etc.
