Federal Government Halts Licensing of New Bus Companies
The Washington Post reports that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has temporarily halted the granting of licenses to new bus companies. This action comes after a bus company that had its license revoked, got a new license under a different name. The renamed bus company is believed to have used retread tires on the steering axle which is prohibited by federal rules. The retread tires failed and caused an accident in Texas that resulted in the deaths of 17 people.Bus companies and trucking companies regularly violate federal safety rules in order to save money.
